Vision
Northumberland County Council has tasked FaulknerBrowns with creating a flagship cultural venue that will foster pride and boost footfall and spending in Blyth. The chosen site was an arts hub for more than 100 years before its Central Cinema was demolished in 1974. Our design for Market Pavilion takes inspiration from the original building, aiming to revitalise the town’s cultural scene with three independent cinema screens, a multi-purpose 120-seat performance hall, a café and creative play spaces.

Energising Blyth

This project is part of a £90 million regeneration programme called ‘Energising Blyth’, which aims to provide new cultural, education, leisure and residential spaces, while boosting Blyth’s renewable energy industry.

Our design evolved from conversations with local people about how to celebrate the town’s changing identity. It embraces the town’s heritage, with elements inspired by the historic cinema and music hall, as well as a spirit of innovation.

A revived market place

One of our main priorities for Market Pavilion was to make it welcoming and approachable, achieved through simple double-gable form and red brick. The glazed sliding doors at ground level allow the building to open out into Market Place, inviting people in and allowing events to spill out.

We hope to add greenery, street furniture and new lighting to the market, as well as refurbishing existing public toilet facilities. We hope this will encourage events in the town centre and help market traders to flourish, boosting growth and investment in to the local economy.
