Blyth Market Pavilion recognised for lasting community impact

We are proud to see Blyth Market Pavilion continue to earn recognition for its positive impact across culture, community and regeneration in Northumberland.

It recently achieved ‘Best Project’ at the RTPI North East Awards for Planning Excellence, in celebration of the venue’s transformative role for the town. This was shortly followed with a win in the 2026 RICS North East Awards for ‘Community Benefit Project of the Year’; an award that celebrates projects delivering meaningful, measurable value for local communities.

Delivered as part of the Energising Blyth programme, Market Pavilion was shaped through extensive public consultation to create a safe, inclusive and adaptable space for the town centre. Since opening in August 2025, Market Pavilion has quickly established itself as a new cultural focal point in Blyth. It has welcomed over 150,000 visitors and over 35,000 people have attended film screenings delivered by independent operators Jam Jar Cinema, alongside a growing programme of cultural events.

A Cultural and Placemaking Programme has introduced more than 90 activities – from free festivals and live performances to creative workshops, family sessions and wellbeing classes. This range of offers is encouraging broad participation and helping the community come together in new ways.

The ripple effect of this activity is felt across the town centre. Increased footfall and local spending, as well as new jobs, apprenticeships and training opportunities, point to Market Pavilion’s role in supporting longer-term economic resilience.

“We have worked so hard over the last few years to create something special for the town and it’s lovely to see how it has been received.”
Rachael Maclean, Architect

The ambition from the outset was to revitalise Blyth’s Market Place as a shared civic space that reflects local identity while leaving room for growth. Market Pavilion has become a focal point for culture and connection, reinforcing Blyth’s character and opening opportunities for creativity and social exchange.

Its continued recognition underlines the difference that considered design and inclusive programming can make in generating places that belong to their communities and endure for the future.
