Vision
Market Halls, a food-focused start-up, set out to revive characterful, unloved spaces with a new model for eating out - restaurant-quality kitchens around a communal food hall, open to everyone. Together, we collaborated to evolve the concept and to design and deliver three London Market Halls, including this transformation of a Grade II listed arcade at Victoria Station into a go-to dining spot.

The Market Halls experience

As you walk into Market Hall Victoria, you’re met with sensory delight - the bustling noise and enticing smells of open kitchens, two bars and a coffee shop, and the clamour of seating for 375 diners. Together with back-of-house areas, these spaces are arranged compactly across three levels to form a communal central atrium and staircase, flooded with light beneath the arcade’s original rooflight. A third, alfresco bar overlooking busy Victoria hosts events and sunrise yoga.

The backdrop

Since 1909, Terminus Place at Victoria Station has been home to an Edwardian shopping arcade, a WWI canteen and the super-club, Pacha. Our design retains textures, structures and finishes from its 100-year history, supplemented by considered modern interventions and minimal seating areas. This approach allows the independent traders, their kitchens and culinary talent to be the dominant voices within the building.

“This is an example of ingenious architectural talent deployed to bring a neglected landmark back to life, creating a genuine sense of community, laughter and happiness.”
