Vision

Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre has been designed in joint venture by hcma architecture + design and Dub Architects in collaboration with FaulknerBrowns. The project rethinks access to cycling and recreation by combining elite performance with community participation. It offers a place where people of all abilities can come together to train, play, and connect throughout the year.

Design approach

Set within Edmonton’s Coronation Park, the centre weaves a large-scale, technical sports venue into the character of an established green space. The design anchors the building in its landscape with earth berms that soften its presence and tie it into the park. New walking and cycling loops extend existing trails, strengthening the network of movement.

A twisting plan, shaped by the dynamic form of the cycling track, gives the façade its distinctive identity. Inside, timber finishes and generous glazing create spaces that feel warm, open, and welcoming. Every detail is intended to make users feel visible and connected, turning architecture into a shared experience rather than a series of separate zones.

“We are proud to have collaborated with hcma architecture + design and Dub Architects to deliver one of North America’s premier cycling facilities and one of Canada’s most dynamic community centres. We expect this facility to inspire participation in cycling and deliver athlete development programmes that support the progression of the next generation of Canadian cyclists to the international stage.”

Community first

The centre challenges the traditional velodrome model. By lifting the cycling track above ground level, the design makes room for inclusive recreation within the core of the plan. A vibrant social hub forms around courts, play spaces, and fitness facilities, while above, a 250-metre UCI Category A track encircles multi-use courts and a four-lane running track with panoramic views across the park.

This layered approach brings different users into proximity – from families at play to professional athletes in training – encouraging curiosity, dialogue, and participation. Every level of ability is welcomed, and every visitor becomes part of the same story.

“Too often, high-performance sports and community recreation occur in separate facilities. With Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre, we rethought the traditional model and designed an integrated experience: one that brings together world-class cycling and triathlon facilities with community sport and recreation spaces for people of all ages and abilities to gather, exercise, and play.”

Inside and out

Colour and material choices establish the building’s identity and reinforce its connection to place. Blues and pinks drawn from Edmonton’s urban character and cycling culture energise the interiors, balanced by the warmth of exposed Douglas Fir panels. Above, the clear-span roof demonstrates one of Canada’s largest Mass Ply installations, while textured façades and glazed openings frame changing views of the park.

The integration continues beyond the building. Shaped berms, informal planting, and outdoor features extend recreation into the landscape, connecting paths and creating seamless transitions between indoors and out.

“We were challenged to insert a large footprint into an established city park. The design of the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre is woven into the fabric of the park, so that the architecture enhances – rather than interrupts – the landscape. The fluid form is more than an expression of sport; it is a calculated response to its environment and context.”
