Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre Award Recognition

Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre has become a two-time award winner, well ahead of its completion date.

It firstly won a World Architecture Festival (WAF) Future Projects Award within the Sports category, and this was swiftly followed by a 2024 Canadian Architect Magazine Award of Merit.

The innovative, 16,600-square-metre, multi-purpose recreational facility sits in the heart of Coronation Park in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and is currently undergoing construction.

We have collaborated with Canada-based hcma architecture + design and Dub Architects on this project; respecting the value of both companies’ unique local knowledge of community-focused recreation and fusing this with our experience designing elite sports facilities.

The WAF Awards put a spotlight on projects that represent the pinnacle of architectural innovation, and the centre was commended for bringing together high-performance sport and community recreation in one, world-class facility.

“It’s super nice to see our FaulknerBrowns collaboration with hcma and Michael Dub recognised by Canadian architects. This project came out of the tenacity of many, but a collaboration of architects that has been special. This project wouldn’t have happened without this team working together.”
Paul Rigby,
Partner, FaulknerBrowns
This annual, national awards program recognises future projects, and the Centre was commended for ‘aiming to play nicely with notable architectural neighbours, while bringing high-performance sport and community recreation together under one roof'.

"The play of berm and cutouts is successful in reducing its apparent size, and in allowing activities to relate to the exterior landscape."

The building’s striking exterior appearance is supported by an interior built on efficiency. The elliptical layout takes lead from the central velodrome, which holds unique placement being a full storey above ground-level, making it fully visible from the main floor of the building.

“Coronation is an innovative hub that brings together high-performance sport and community recreation into one world-class facility. Soon to be Edmonton's new velodrome, visitors from near and far can gather, socialise, and play while cyclists race overhead at speeds of up to 80km/h.”

The facility has been designed to successfully serve both elite athletic competition and community recreation needs. It will integrate a wide variety of interests and skill levels and responding to the needs of all ages and abilities, becoming a true community and social hub for central-north Edmonton. It will also connect to the award-winning Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre, and will include a new fitness centre, gym courts, running track and additional community spaces.

Set for completion in 2026, the centre will be seeking a Category Two facility standard designation by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world governing body of cycling. This designation qualifies a facility to host World Cups, Continental Championships, Junior World Championships and other national and international cycling events.
