Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre opens in Edmonton

Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre has opened in Edmonton, Alberta, providing a new hub for cycling, sport and community life.

Designed in joint venture by hcma architecture + design and Dub Architects in collaboration with FaulknerBrowns, the velodrome brings elite cycling facilities together with inclusive spaces for all ages, shaping one of Canada’s most versatile settings for sport and recreation.

At the heart of Coronation Park, the 16,500m² facility provides year-round activity for a city shaped by northern seasons. Its centrepiece is the 250m indoor velodrome, built to Olympic standard and certified by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) for international competition.

This is the first facility of its kind in Canada to combine high‑performance cycling with open access for the community. It supports pathways for participation at every level, from new riders to athletes aiming for the world stage. The velodrome track is raised above ground level, framing sports courts and a running track and ensuring activity remains visible and inviting. This arrangement draws different groups together, encouraging interaction and shared experience.

The centre is planned as a civic hub, connected to its landscape with new walking and cycling routes, outdoor play areas and social spaces. Its scale is handled carefully to reduce visual impact, while strengthening links across Coronation Park and beyond. A wide mix of facilities - fitness studios, courts, play zones and community rooms - makes the building accessible and relevant to people of all ages and abilities.

By combining elite sport with everyday recreation, the centre offers more than a venue for competition. It creates a space where people can meet, move and belong. This integrated approach reflects a clear ambition: to nurture active lifestyles and strengthen community life for years to come.
