Kings Hall: An AJ award-winning future retrofit

Following its planning approval in April, the refurbishment of Kings Hall Leisure Centre in Hackney was selected as a finalist in the ‘Future Reuse’ category at the Architects’ Journal 2025 Retrofit & Reuse Awards.

We were incredibly proud to see it announced as the winning scheme at the ceremony, with judges commending the levels of care, attention and diligence given to the building.

Judges further noted:

“There is a desire to be true to the fabric of the building – and in terms of social responsibility. The building gives back to the community, and it can be a very good model for others.”

The project has now reached another major milestone, with the business case approved and the Main Contract formally awarded to Morgan Sindall Construction.

Following its temporary closure, construction of the revitalised Kings Hall Leisure Centre is set to soon begin, with completion anticipated for Winter 2028.

“After three years of design development and community consultation, we are thrilled to see Kings Hall move into the construction phase. Working closely with Morgan Sindall, we are committed to revitalising this historic landmark with a design that honours its heritage while breathing new life into Hackney for the next generation.”
