Kings Hall Leisure Centre wins planning approval

Our redevelopment of Kings Hall Leisure Centre has been granted planning approval. The plan encompasses a full refurbishment, retrofit, extension and public realm design.

Since its construction in 1897, Kings Hall has been a historic landmark and community fixture in Hackney; a vital part of the borough’s social fabric. With its current layout presenting accessibility, lighting, and space utilisation challenges, our revitalised proposal preserves the Victorian character of the Grade II listed building, reviving many historical features, while bringing the centre up to modern standards of accessibility and sustainability.

“By balancing preservation with modernisation, we can honour heritage sites like Kings Hall while making them functional and relevant for future generations.”

Our proposal for the landmark leisure centre refurbishes the Mixed Pool Hall, reinstates the former Ladies Pool as a new Teaching Pool, enhances sports and fitness areas and improves changing facilities. The previously demolished 1950's entrance to Clapton Square will also be reinstated, alongside mechanical, electrical and plumbing services. The proposed development is designed to be adaptable and durable, extending the building’s lifespan and drastically reducing its carbon footprint and the need for future refurbishments.

We have worked with Hackney Council, Historic England, community groups, and residents to preserve Kings Hall’s historical significance and create a vibrant, accessible, inclusive and functional space that continues to meet evolving community needs.

“Kings Hall Leisure Centre has been at the heart of Hackney for generations and attracts local residents from all walks of life to enjoy exercise, healthy activity and leisure. I’m delighted that these stunning plans will transform the centre and that we are able to invest in the wellbeing of our local communities. We’ve worked really hard with centre users to make sure we can preserve and protect what’s important to residents and provide vital new facilities and amenities for everyone to enjoy.”

By preserving this Victorian landmark while equipping it for the future, we strive to ensure that Kings Hall will remain an enduring part of the borough’s social and architectural landscape.
