Vision
Sportcampus Zuiderpark was created in response to a shared vision by the Municipality of The Hague, The Hague University of Applied Sciences, and ROC Mondriaan College. In response to their brief for a centre that would embody the principles of motion and activity, FaulknerBrowns designed a dynamic campus that combines facilities for both amateur and elite athletes with spaces for sports science and education.

For athletes of all abilities

The gymnastics hall, beach sports hall, dojo, spectator arena and multi-purpose sports hall are shared by more than 1000 students daily, along with 20 sports clubs, the national beach volleyball team and members of the local community. FaulknerBrowns’ design creates visual links between the different facilities, encouraging visitors—whatever their ability—to explore new sports.

The facility runs regular open days, demonstrations and introductory sessions to promote community participation. One of the highlights is the annual City Games—a free event created to encourage residents of The Hague to get moving. Participants can sample over 50 sports and activities, with a focus on accessibility to the elderly and disabled.

The campus has been hailed as the ‘pearl of the city’ by athletes. Its popularity and versatility led Zuiderpark to be chosen to host prestigious international sporting events like the Davis Cup, the Invictus Games and the Beach Volleyball World Cup.

Fluid form

As you approach the building, you’re struck by a sense of fluidity. The curved form and textured precast concrete panels of the lower level visually ground the building. Above, a metallic ribbon of brightly polished stainless steel narrows and twists, reflecting the changing light and movement of clouds and trees. Its surface appears dynamic, continually shifting in colour and form.

The campus was carefully designed to exist in harmony with its historic surroundings. Its curved edges create the impression of the building receding into the distance, while the bulkier spaces are strategically placed along the urban edge of the site. These elements make the centre seem smaller and more inviting. The lively entrance courtyard feels like an extension of the park, which seamlessly transitions into the campus.

Sportcampus Zuiderpark is much more than a centre of excellence for sport, it is a community asset for all.
