International Civic Trust Award
Sportcampus Zuiderpark received an International Civic Trust Award at the 60th anniversary celebrations of the highly respected awards programme.
Established in 1959, the Civic Trust Awards recognise the very best in architecture, design, planning, landscape and public art. Awards are given to projects that demonstrate high quality architecture or design, have demonstrated sustainability, are accessible to all users, and have made a positive cultural, social or economic contribution to the local community.
The innovative Dutch sports campus provides The Hague and communities around the Zuiderpark, the opportunity to train and develop talent, as well as to create positive momentum for movement and sport. The overriding aim is to emphasize the importance of sport and exercise through learning and engagement, for the amateur as well as the elite athlete, using sport as the inspiration to deliver a healthier community and society.
Praising the building, the judges remarked: “This elite sports facility is one that is very much designed around the intended use by the community. The integration of sustainability into the scheme is commendable and allows it to contribute to the overall objective of the city. The mass of the building works very well to scale down the appearance and enables it to sit within the locality rather than overpowering it. A space of wellbeing that promotes exercise not just in function but also through the dynamism of the architecture, with its iconic metallic ribbon.”
The scheme narrowly missed out on being named the world’s best completed sports building at the World Architecture Festival 2018, receiving the category’s Highly Commended accolade.
