From fabrication yard to City Hall
Fabrication of the main accommodation staircase for our new £42m City Hall scheme for Sunderland City Council is underway at local steel fabricators Beal Architectural.
The building itself represents the next phase of the Riverside Sunderland masterplan—which we are also working in collaboration on—to regenerate a prominent 5.5ha site to the north west of Sunderland city centre, creating the ‘civic focus’ for a new urban quarter.
It was important to us to ensure that the building reflects Sunderland’s heritage of making — a heritage continuing to influence seminal and innovative fabrication on a monumental scale, including the fabrication of Anthony Gormley’s iconic Angel of the North.
We saw the new City Hall building as an opportunity to collaborate with both the local community and the unique array of specialist fabricators nearby.
Embracing both digitised design, manufacture and handmade assembly, the stair has been fabricated twenty two minutes east of the site and is due to be installed in October 2020, with the building due to be completed in 2021.
