Britannia Leisure Centre appointment

Hackney Britannia Leisure Centre London Sport Aerial Proposed Site Lh

We have been appointed by The London Borough of Hackney as the leisure architect to design a new swimming pool and leisure centre as part of the mixed-use Britannia project in Shoreditch.

The Britannia project is the largest mixed-use development currently being delivered by the London Borough of Hackney, and is to provide a new secondary school to meet the increasing need for secondary school places in the borough, and to replace the existing Britannia Leisure Centre with new, modern facilities capable of meeting the demand and growing population in the area.

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios have been appointed as overall masterplan lead and school and housing architect.

Detailed plans will now be developed with input taken from a community engagement programme which will allow local residents and the wider community to share their views on design options.

Steve McIntyre, Partner at FaulknerBrowns, said: "It is fantastic to be involved in such an important redevelopment scheme for the London Borough of Hackney. Shoreditch Park is a fascinating site and we are looking forward to creating something really special. We place a great emphasis on creating leisure destinations that not only have widespread appeal, but that have the inherent flexibility to adapt to the future demands of the community they serve. We hope that the new sports and leisure facility we design will inspire people and encourage them to participate in sport."

Philip Glanville, Mayor of Hackney, said: “This is an exciting project which will enable us to invest in vital local facilities; a new secondary school to ensure there are high quality school places for local children, a brand new leisure centre to replace the outdated existing one, a café and toilets for the park and new housing – including affordable homes.”
