Culture House

Culture House is an ambitious new cultural hub in Sunderland city centre. The modern learning and community building will act as new civic landmark within the wider regeneration of Sunderland.

The project includes performance spaces, exhibition and gallery spaces, libraries for children, young people and adults, a local studies and archives centre, creative labs, a roof garden and spaces for instructed learning and play.

Culture House's site on the south side of Keel Square is a key focal point within the wider Riverside Sunderland masterplan, and the proposed building uses a strong sculptural form to create an identifiable landmark. The overall mass is carved into smaller blocks in response to the high street setting, with punched openings and towers. Further details in brick, masonry and clay reflect the rich material palette of the neighbouring Magistrates Court.

The Culture House will be a library, but unlike any we have seen in the city. It will be an engaging, interactive, playful environment, where people of all ages will feel inspired and enthused and can learn in fun new ways.
