YAPF Awards 2024

We were absolutely thrilled to be involved in the inaugural RIBA YAPF Awards this year.

The awards took place at Tyneside Cinema to celebrate the best young architectural talent in the North East.

Not only did we celebrate FaulknerBrowns’ shortlisted entrants; Ashleigh Towsey, Harrison Avery, Laura McClorey and Rachael Maclean across multiple categories, but our Associate Architect and RIBA North East Co-Chair, Andrew Thompson, was a member of the judging panel (of course, for categories not involving our team members).

To truly mark the occasion and ensure the awards take lasting pride of place for the winners on the night, Architectural Degree Apprentice Daniel Hodgson took to designing the very first line of physical YAPF plaques, before our skilled model makers Andrew and Abbie produced them in our studio workshop.

The Award icons were made from a deal of rough sawn American Oak, selected from the FaulknerBrowns timber store. The deal was planed and then split before sections were selected, then a template was used to mark the best profile and grain for the hexagon form. The fine finish on the natural timber was sanded, then we applied the custom rubdown text.

Architect and PhD candidate Laura McClorey was Highly Commended for ‘Researcher of the Year’, while Architect Harrison Avery was also Highly Commended in the ‘Designer of the Year’ category.

We extend our congratulations to all this year’s winners and nominees. The breadth of talent evident across the submissions certainly highlighted that the future of our profession is in safe hands. We await 2025’s ceremony in great anticipation.
