REVEAL: Architecture 2025

Northumbria University students celebrated the opening night of REVEAL: Architecture last week, exhibiting their project boards and models.

The REVEAL show is an annual showcase of undergraduate, postgraduate, interior architecture, and degree apprenticeship work. Each student presents through drawings, model-making, digital fabrication computer aided design and digital artwork, with architectural schemes varying in typology from masterplans to healthcare, housing to sport.

Our Architectural Degree Apprentices: Fraser, Ken, Lee and Nicoleta have not only developed thoughtful, visionary proposals, but have done so while simultaneously working in professional practice. Their projects reflect the depth of learning that comes from balancing academic exploration with real-world experience.

REVEAL: Architecture serves as a celebration of three years’ hard work achieving their master’s degrees, before they start their final year to become fully qualified architects.

Fraser Tattersdill

“My project, Ironopolis Centre of Excellence, explores the regeneration of a post-industrial dockland site in Middlesbrough. The proposal aims to catalyse gentrification in a socially inclusive and sustainable way by embedding a multifunctional sports and community complex along the processional route towards the Riverside Stadium. The design integrates sport, education, health, and cultural infrastructure within a singular architectural vision, and with a strong emphasis on football as a social and economic vehicle for transformation. The scheme proposes a new model for urban stadiums that were introduced soon after the 1990 Taylor report–not as isolated spectacles, but as active anchors that nurture long-term economic, social, and health benefits.”

Ken Alford

“My project looked at the development of a former mining site into a mixed-use park that incorporates ecology, innovation and cultural amenity. The park provides a range of amenity and innovation towers connected via raised walkways, allowing the biodiversity to thrive at ground level and elevate pedestrian movement. The main hub facilitates the development of these towers and is the primary access point. The towers that are created in this building are then tested in varying locations around the site to analyse building performance before being replicated in other locations. The goal is to create a new building typology that could house specific functions required by communities, such as solar towers that could power homes or cultural visitor centres.”

Nicoleta Coman

“My project focuses on reimagining Calders Yard as a new leisure destination. The catalyst building would be an urban farm where robots are designed to take care of the plants and create the perfect environment for them to thrive. The landscape is decontaminated through phytoremediation, where sunflower and rapeseed are planted to extract the lead from the soil. The elevated walkways, ghosts of the rail tracks that were used on the site, are now key connecting points in the landscape.”

Lee Thackray

“My project is called ‘Momentum’ and proposes a new museum and innovation centre in Newcastle. The centre will develop and educate visitors on new sustainable innovations, whilst honouring the site’s historic mixed-use programme. Gleaning inspiration from the pioneering spirit of local innovators and the optimism of the High Tech movement, the project presents a mitigation to the Anthropocene, suggesting new architecture, construction methods and typologies presented through a positive, utopian optic.”
