AJ Architecture Awards win for Ravelin Sports Centre

Ravelin Sports Centre, a new facility for both the University of Portsmouth and local people, has won an AJ (Architects' Journal) Architecture Award.

The awards celebrate the very best architecture in the UK, with projects assessed on their design quality, contribution to their neighbourhood, sustainability and the experience of building users.

Judges who visited Ravelin Sports Centre chose the project as the clear winner in the leisure category and recognised how 'unusually close collaboration' between the design team contributed to creating an 'incredibly successful', ultra-low energy building.

Ravelin Sports Centre includes swimming, dry sports, fitness, climbing, bouldering and squash facilities which are used by students, university staff and also the wider public in Portsmouth. The judges not only admired our design and pairing of materials, but how local people have embraced the project, saying:

"It was full of school kids and families. It really felt like local people had adopted it, which isn’t the case with a lot of university facilities."

We are delighted to see this feedback, which is a real testament to the University of Portsmouth's ambition for the project, and their success in creating a welcoming environment for sport and exercise.
