Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon receives backing
We are delighted to hear that the plans for a £1.3bn tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay have been independently backed by a government-commissioned review by former energy minister Charles Hendry.
Mr Hendry’s report provides fresh impetus to the scheme which includes our plans for an international watersports centre and hatchery within the lagoon.
Mr Hendry commented: “Tidal lagoons can be an important and exciting new industry for the United Kingdom. We are blessed with some of the best resources in the world, which puts us in a unique position to be world leaders.”
In a statement Mark Shorrock, Chief Executive of Tidal Lagoon Power said: “Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is a vision of how Great Britain can replace part of our ageing power station fleet with low cost, reliable power that also revitalises our industrial heartlands and coastal communities.” He continued: “The Hendry Review has set the final piece of the jigsaw in place: a watershed moment for British energy, British manufacturing, British productivity and our coastal communities. We look forward to working with Ministers and Officials to bring this new industry to life.”
Lee McLaughlin, Partner at FaulknerBrowns reacted to the news saying: “This is a great step towards a bright future for low carbon, environmentally sustainable energy production in this country. By integrating recreational facilities into the infrastructure for energy generation in this way, we have the opportunity to reinforce our social sustainability ambitions, creating a wide range of world-class facilities for the communities in and around Swansea Bay.”
