Lee Valley Ice Centre breaks ground
Last week construction started at Lea Valley Ice Centre, a £30 million centre FaulknerBrowns designed for Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA) in East London. The new venue will replace and double the capacity of the existing Lee Valley Ice Centre which has closed after 36 years of use, having struggled to meet growing demand.
Our design expands the range of activities that can be run at the centre concurrently, with two Olympic-sized ice rinks and capacity for 800 spectators, a gym and exercise studio, a multi-purpose studio and a café. The centre will act as a community hub and will be one of only three Olympic-sized twin rinks in the UK.
The new ice centre will sit within part of the 26 mile-long Lee Valley Regional Park (LVRP) and has been designed with a tight, efficient footprint to minimise impact on the surrounding parkland. The building, which is due to open in 2022, will also be accompanied by landscape and ecology improvements, including new wetland habitats.
‘I am delighted that construction work has begun and I can’t wait to enjoy the new centre when it opens… the Team GB Olympic ice stars of tomorrow could get their start here – it’s a really exciting opportunity for Waltham Forest.’
