Retail and Leisure Architect of the Year
We are extremely pleased and honoured to have received the prestigious title of Retail and Leisure Architect of the Year at the Building Design Architect of the Year Awards 2020.
Now in its 17th edition, the awards honour architectural achievement across a broad range of sectors. The programme is unique in that it judges competing practices through a body of work rather than individual projects, rewarding consistent quality over multiple schemes.
In the presentation of the award the judges said: “The diversity of the buildings within FaulknerBrowns’ submission reflects the changing needs of society and showcases their desire to work with clients to create opportunities for people. Their designs were of exceptional quality and recognise the vital functions that sport and leisure buildings fulfil within communities."
The projects submitted for judging included Beacon of Light for Foundation of Light, Britannia Leisure Centre for Hackney Council, St John's School Sports Centre, and Market Hall West End.
Beacon of Light is a unique centre which harnesses the power of sport to inspire traditionally hard to reach individuals within the local community to pursue opportunities for education, employment, health and wellbeing. The diverse and inclusive programme of leisure activities provides something for all ages and abilities.
Britannia Leisure Centre is a pioneering city centre leisure facility which aims to tackle growing levels of obesity in the London Borough of Hackney, by promoting participation in sport and leisure. A smart approach to the stacking of facilities has allowed a diverse mix of wet and dry activities to be made available on a tight, but highly visible and accessible site neighbouring Shoreditch Park.
St John’s School Sports Centre provides a bright and inspiring environment for students to discover their sporting potential, and to learn skills that will set them on the path to a healthy and active lifestyle. The flexibility of the design allows the school to adapt and expand the facilities to meet the changing needs of the student population.
Market Hall West End sees the transformation of a former department store on London’s busiest shopping street into an exciting leisure destination, which provides the ideal environment for people to meet and share their stories over food. The building has been configured to support the wellbeing of visitors, with zones of differing characters making those on their own or in small groups feel as comfortable as those in large groups.
Whilst this is a great accolade for us to receive, we recognise that this achievement could not have been made without the vision of our clients and the commitment and dedication of the contractors, consultants and suppliers involved in our projects. We thank you all very much for your hard work and collaboration.
