Sportcampus Zuiderpark has been shortlisted to receive the title of BNA Best Building of the Year 2018 by the Dutch Association of Architects. It is one of nine buildings in the race for the most revered architecture prize in the Netherlands. The award recognizes the building which provides the greatest added value for its client and society as a whole.

Located in the heart of the historic Zuiderpark in The Hague, the Netherlands, the unique sports campus is an innovative collaboration of alliances between education, sport, sport science and the community, for both the Municipality of The Hague and its private partners: the Haagse Hogeschool and ROC Mondriaan.

The sports campus provides The Hague and communities around the Zuiderpark, the opportunity to train and develop talent, as well as create positive momentum for movement and sport. The overriding aim is to emphasize the importance of sport and exercise through learning and engagement, for the amateur as well as the elite athlete, using sport as the inspiration to deliver a healthier community and society.

The campus embodies the principles of ‘motion and activity’. This is expressed externally in the fluid movement of the elevational treatment. The upper part of the elevation is expressed as a metallic ‘ribbon’ that narrows and twists as it wraps the building. Constructed from brightly polished stainless steel, the dynamic ribbon changes colour with different lighting conditions and cloud patterns, as well as reflecting the animation of its natural setting.

Whilst the panel of judges decides on the winner, a public vote is taking place to select the winner of a special Public Choice Award. You can cast your vote for the winning building here. The winning buildings will be unveiled at a ceremony in Amsterdam on the 18th May.

Russ Davenport, Partner at FaulknerBrowns Architects, said: “The client was clear from the outset of the project that sport has the power to change lives and be a force for social good. This is the first principle from which the sport campus was born. The level of ambition set by the entire project team has resulted in a building that embodies this principle and provides a fantastic resource for all to discover and reach their full potential.”
