Albion Square wins planning approval
Our proposals for a mixed-use development at Albion Square in Hull have won approval, with a unanimous decision from Hull's planning committee.
Albion Square combines new workplaces, retail space and 226 new homes with a large urban park, designed with landscape architects Gillespies. The project will create a new green space in the city, bringing both environmental and wellbeing benefits.
The development is located on the site of Hull’s former BHS and Co-Op buildings, and incorporates three renovated murals from these buildings; the Sponge Mural, Shoal of Fish and the city’s iconic Three Ships Mural, all by artist Alan Boyson.
Our design arranges four mixed-use blocks around the new park, positioned to restore the city’s street frontages and corners. Each new building has been designed to respond to the city context around it. On Albion Street, low-rise housing will sensitively reflect the existing Georgian terraces, while the largest restored mural, the Three Ships, will be incorporated in its original position, within a new stepped block facing King Edward Square and the city centre.
Throughout the development, active ground floors to both the streetscape and the park will provide retail units, co-working spaces and amenities for residents. The park within will include places to play, sit and keep fit, in a landscape rich with wildflowers, wetlands and water attenuation features, as well as a new cycle hub.
Construction of the new development is expected to start in 2023, with a target completion date in 2026.
