Sunderland High Street West wins a WAF Award
Sunderland High Street West has been announced as a winner at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) awards, in the commercial mixed-use category of future projects. The awards are part of an annual, international festival dedicated to celebrating and sharing architectural excellence from across the world.
The project is a masterplan to transform Sunderland's High Street West and is backed by £25m funding from the government's Future High Street Fund. The ambition is to diversify the city centre, with a focus on business, leisure and a new cultural hub.
The project also connects the city centre to Riverside Sunderland, a 33 hectare masterplan for a sustainable neighbourhood and destination. The masterplan has been led jointly by FaulknerBrowns and Proctor and Matthews Architects and designed in collaboration with igloo Regeneration, MawsonKerr Architects and Sunderland City Council.
This year shortlisted projects were presented to international jurors virtually, and we will be presenting Sunderland High Street West live on Friday 3 December as part of the virtual festival, for consideration as overall Future Project of the Year. Congratulations to the whole project team!
