Moorways Sports Village opens in Derby

Moorways Sports Village Opens Faulknerbrowns Architects Lh

This week, Moorways Sports Village opened to the public. The project for Derby City Council provides swimming and leisure facilities, for both recreation and competitive sport.

The new centre includes a ten lane, 50m swimming pool, which uses two booms and two moving floors to form multiple spatial arrangements for swimming clubs and teaching groups. Seating for more than 400 spectators and timing room ensure the pool can host national and international competitions.

The new leisure facilities include a water park area with flumes and a learner pool, together with a training gym, fitness studios, sauna and steam rooms, a café and soft play areas. The centre sits alongside the existing Moorways athletics stadium, in a serene parkland setting, creating a new hub for sports and recreation in Derby.

The opening of the centre was attended by local athletes, swim teams and councillors, including Olympic swimmer and BBC Sport presenter Mark Foster, who said ‘Without a shadow of a doubt this pool could create the next Adam Peaty… It gives people the best start in life, the best start in sport right on your doorstep.’
