Britannia wins AJ100 Community Impact of the Year
Our design for Britannia Leisure Centre has won Community Impact of the Year at the Architects' Journal AJ100 awards. The project in Hackney combines swimming pools, sports courts and gym facilities in a welcoming and accessible building alongside Shoreditch Park.
‘This building had inclusivity embedded into the design at every step.’ said judges, who were impressed with how consultation with user groups had directly fed into the design to remove barriers to participation, creating a welcoming environment with many spatially fantastic moments.
Community consultation events and workshops with local groups such Project Indigo, Hackney’s LGBTQI+ youth group, fed into our design, which incorporates inclusive changing facilities and flexible solutions for privacy. Views into and between key spaces and activities encourage visitors and passers-by to engage in sport and movement.
As a result, Britannia Leisure Centre has increased local participation in fitness, swimming and sports by more than 160%.
