Moorways Sports Village
Moorways Sports Village is a swimming and leisure facility in Derby for both community recreation and elite training.
Situated alongside an existing atheltics stadium, the new centre provides a ten-lane, 50 metre swimming pool, a leisure water area and a teaching pool, together with a gym, fitness studios, sauna and steam rooms, a café and soft play areas.
The project arranges activities in two intersecting volumes, to create views between key spaces, encouraging connection between athletes, learners and family visitors. Externally, the building’s silver-toned aluminium cladding references the neighbouring Rolls-Royce Aerospace Campus.
Our design brings elite athletes and leisure swimmers together to connect, encouraging participation and aspiration across the community.

flexibility
To manage the different demands for swimming space from clubs, teaching groups and recreational swimmers, the 50m pool contains two booms and two moving floors. This allows it to easily form multiple spatial arrangements, including three separate 25m swimming pools.
As a result, lane swimming, aqua classes, and swimming lessons can all happen concurrently. The pool also provides seating for more than 400 spectators, and a timing room, for hosting regional and national competitions.
Legacy
Moorways Sports Village will help improve the wellbeing of the city’s population for years to come.
