The Word, National Centre for the Written Word, has enjoyed tremendous success since opening in October 2016. The unique and innovative combination of 21st century library, digital media centre, community hub and national cultural institution, has exceeded all expectations, bringing tangible social, cultural and economic benefits to South Shields.

The CIAT judging panel remarked: “The Word was a challenging project that inspired a building for the present, with inbuilt adaptability to future proof its functions. The design concept and architecture have been informed by architectural technology, and its building anatomy and physiology are clearly articulated in the primary and secondary elements, services and external envelope.”

Steve McIntyre, Partner at FaulknerBrowns, said: “Having already received a raft of accolades for the building’s architectural merit, it is fantastic to now add The Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology to the collection. As a practice we place great emphasis on the importance of technology as the means by which innovative design ideas can become robust, efficient and sustainable buildings.”
